Dawngate, made for the community
Dawngate is a new MOBA made by Waystone Games to reimagine how these action based arenas are played. It’s focus is on making a balanced game experience where the story and content is community-driven. Before I got into depths of the game play, the setting of the game and the phase of the game I want to make sure that you understand that the game is in early development and many of the cases I take up in this article will probably be changed at a later date. I might do another review of the finished released product when that time comes to do a comparison to the beta version of the game.
The map is divided into two opposing sides where each side has a Guardian they are protecting, destroying the other teams Guardian result in victory and defeat to the opposite team. Each team are given three bindings to protect their guardian along a dual lane path towards the other team, where they’ve got the same map inverted on the other side. The best way to achieve victory is usually by destroying the enemy’s bindings along this path down as a team. For each binding destroyed of the enemy team you gain bonus vim for all your team and empower your minion wave, but I’ll get back to exactly how later. Each team also hold two spirit wells on the sides on these lanes. These wells gives extra income from the workers that spawn and work there. This Is usually a good early income and does give in the long run a good amount of vim to your team. You can capture the enemies wells and they can capture yours. So defending theses are important. After a capture they got locked out for a period of time where they cannot be recaptured. Each side also have a jungle where natural monsters spawn. There is an inverted jungle on the opposing side. Looking from the bottom side team you have a spirit well along the top with an orange buff there and two minor camps. Between the lanes there will always be the blue buff and four minor camps. And at the bottom part there is a green buff and three minor camps. Each side of the map also got a camp of money pigs that gives a large chunk of vim and experience, these are located along the mid of the map on opposing sides. In the middle of the map there is a large boss called the parasite that spawns in its weakest for and evolve two times with time. He grants a buff giving health regeneration and power, with a good chunk of vim to the team that gets the killing blow on him. image source: http://dawngate.gamepedia.com/The_Battlefield
Each team have five players on it that chose their shaper in the pre-game lobby, and chose their role and perks. There is four roles to choose from:
- Gladiator: This role is for players who want to farm lane minions as their primary source of vim.
- Tactician: This role is for players who want to support their allies in lane.
- Hunter: This role is for players who want to earn their vim and experience from killing the jungle monster camps.
- Predator: This role is for players who want play aggressive and get kills; for themselves, or their team.
There is at the moment I’m writing this article 18 shapers to choose from. Each with their unique kit of abilities. Many of them fit perfectly into some of the roles that are given, while others can fit into several of the roles given. Each of the shapers are given 4 abilities and 3 spells chosen from a spell book. I won’t go into depth of each shaper and each spell you can choose, because there is such a wide variety of spells to choose and shapers to choose from. If you want to know more about the shapers and their abilities and what spells that are I suggest taking a look at http://dawngate.gamepedia.com/Dawngate_Wiki
The game play is very well-balanced from what I’ve seen myself. There are several approaches to how to win the game and there is no set in stone meta for how to play the game in any way yet. The game is a much more team oriented game that other MOBA games out there at the moment, and a lot of the ultimate abilities of the shapers feels rather strong in their own way. Each shaper is also given a free ward at a cool down at the same time as it expire, so using these cleverly is very important as you cannot buy any extras or lower the cool down in any way. Killing enemy bindings yields not just vim, but also increases the capabilities of your large minion in the minion waves, and make it spawn more regularly. Making killing bindings very important for defeating the enemy team. The items in the game feels in many ways very overpowered, but they all got counter parts to themselves, so in a way they balance out very well. I like the dividing of items into different stats and how they name the items themselves out from what kind of stat points they give. image source: https://www.waystonegames.com/#/home
Summary of Dawngate review
The game so far feels very good, it’s got good and responsive controls. The shapers are pretty balanced out, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Teamwork seem to be the common point that wins you games that I think is brilliant as it is a teamwork game. The client needs a lot of work before I can say anything really about it, but to my understanding they will focus on making the game balanced out before they move onto the client and matchmaking. I’d give this game a solid 9.5 out of 10 from what I’ve seen so far with the game. I’d give it top score if it was a more finished product, so you could say I leave those points to be earned from Waystone by keeping up the good work they’ve put into the game so far. I’m looking forward to more beta-weekends of this game, and I hope you do the same. I’d also like if you’d take your time to put in your own thoughts of the game in a comment below and give your vote on the game. Tell me what you think of the game and what you like about it.
